Mune is a Japanese tattoo artist at Skintrade Tattoos in Midtown Manhattan, specializing in Japanese Traditional tattooing and tebori. Originally from Sendai, Japan, his work combines traditional Japanese tattoo principles with influences drawn from graffiti, street culture and years spent between Japan, San Francisco and New York City.

Originally from Sendai, Japan, Mune developed his tattoo practice around Japanese Traditional imagery, strong composition, and the relationship between a tattoo and the natural movement of the body.
His work includes both machine tattooing and Tebori (手彫り), the traditional Japanese hand-tattooing method. Mune uses tebori as part of his approach to Japanese tattooing, carrying a traditional technique into the custom work he creates today.
Graffiti has also been a major influence on Mune’s visual language. His background and connections within Japanese graffiti culture include WANTO, founder of Tokyo’s influential 246 graffiti crew. WANTO is widely associated with the development of Tokyo’s graffiti scene and the 246 crew, which includes writers from Japan and abroad.
That graffiti influence can be seen in Mune’s sense of movement, lettering, scale and composition. Rather than existing separately from his tattoo work, those influences have become part of the way he draws and builds larger Japanese Traditional pieces.
Before coming to New York City, Mune also spent time in San Francisco, California, continuing to develop his work within another city with deep tattoo and graffiti histories. His experiences across Japan, San Francisco and New York City have shaped an approach that remains rooted in Japanese tattoo tradition while carrying influences from the different creative environments he has worked in.
