Al Razor is a Queens-born New York City tattoo artist working at Skintrade Tattoos in Midtown Manhattan. With more than a decade of experience, his work moves between custom freehand lettering, black-and-grey realism, Japanese-inspired tattooing, portraiture, anime, fine-line work and illustrative tattoo design.
Rather than working from copy-and-paste designs, Razor builds tattoos around the individual—using the client’s idea, references, story or personal symbolism as the starting point for original work.
BUILT THROUGH TRAVEL
Born and raised in Queens, New York, Al Razor developed his tattoo career through a combination of New York street culture, lettering, drawing and years of working across different tattoo environments.
Lettering remains one of the strongest foundations of his work. His approach draws from custom script, calligraphy, graffiti and Chicano lettering traditions, often developing designs directly around the shape and movement of the body rather than relying on pre-made fonts.
Razor’s tattooing also extends into black-and-grey realism, portraiture, Japanese-inspired work, anime and illustrative tattoos, allowing him to move between highly rendered imagery and more graphic compositions depending on the project.
His career has taken him beyond New York through tattoo conventions, guest spots across the United States and repeated trips to Okinawa, Japan, where he has tattooed during multiple visits. Those experiences helped shape an approach that pulls from different tattoo traditions while remaining rooted in his identity as a New York artist.
